How to Create Custom Role Categories in Discord
Advanced Discord Server Tips & Tricks
Small Discord servers rarely need more than an Admin role and a Member role with slightly better permissions than @everyone if there are less than 12 active members.
However, there are a couple of use cases where your server may benefit from custom role categories. So, here's a quick rundown on how to create them.
The Steps
- Choose Role Categories
- Create Role Categories
- Assign New Roles to Server Members
Choose Role Categories
Custom member roles allow you to specify permissions for several members at once and send push notifications to those specific groups with relative ease. But today we’re going to use them a little differently.
For my new gaming server, I went with three main role categories.
- Platforms - This will allow players to compare their options and easily organize multiplayer game nights that require cross platforming.
- DnD - Because the users on my server are also avid DnD players I wanted to add a set of roles to differentiate players and dungeon masters.
- Misc. - Some Discord bots like Rythm require users to have special role categories to be able to use bot commands.
Create Role Categories
To achieve the result that we want, you’re going to want to go into Server Settings > Roles. From here, create a new role just like normal.
To get the visual effect we want, make your new role category colour #2f3136 and use the U+2800 Braille Pattern Blank Unicode character, ‘⠀’ to apply the appropriate number of character spaces to center your new role category.
Assign New Roles to Server Members
Many popular servers have upwards of 10 custom roles assigned to active members at a time. But it can end up being overwhelming. 👇
Once you’ve made sure your role categories have been organized properly you can apply them to server members by clicking on their usernames.
The beauty of using custom role categories is that it becomes very easy to organize and display information about users, their interests and any special permissions they have in an easy to read format. Pretty nice right?
